Food security is the basic right for all human being. Although Bangladesh has significant achievements to ensure food secure and prevent hunger, the government is still working to meet the dietary deficiencies and nutritional needs of the vulnerable people through promoting sustainable agriculture and social safety net programs to ensure no one leaves behind. with the government initiatives, the NGOs are contributing in achieving food security and livelihood development through different interventions.
BGS has been implementing the projects with major focus of community development, developing social cohesion and socio-economic empowerment in the society. Since beginning, Bangla-German Sampreeti (BGS) has been implementing livelihood development projects for the well-bring of the underprivileged and poor communities through capacity building of the targeted families providing employment supports and income generating opportunities, integrating other social supports, health, social capacity and engagement, job linkage, strengthening the social safeties, and effectively managing poverty. It has implemented several livelihood development projects in Rangpur, Tangail and Cox’s Bazar districts.
During the period from 2002 to 20210, BGS has implemented livelihood development and economic enhancement projects in the Ukhiya Upazila, such as Integrated Livelihood Promotion project, Agriculture and Nutrition Extension Program, Ukhiya Integrated development project etc. with the support of Germany donor Lichtbrücke (LB, Germany) and German Agro Action and achieved a remarkable progress in this subject matter.
Currently, BGS is implementing two livelihood development projects at Ukhiya and Teknaf Upazila in Cox’s Bazar district with the support of Germany donor Lichtbruecke (LB, Germany) and World Vision (Hongkong). Among two, one of them BGS has been implementing a 3 years consortium project with in Teknaf Upazila “Strengthening Capacity of Rohingya Hosting Community at Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh“ project covering Baharchara union which focused on homestead space resources and fallow land of the host community used to produce nutritionally balanced foods, modern and sustainable agro technology are used by the farmers and livelihood situation of firm families, technically skilled with enhanced capacities of adolescents and Youths of the host community and involved with income generating activities, and empowering the youth and leaders of host & Rohingya Communities through harmonious understanding and cooperation. A total 500 families are directly involved in this project.
While, BGS has also been implementing another 6 years project “Gender Inclusive Pathway out of Poverty of Vulnerable Families in Cox’s Bazar‘‘ since 2018 partnership with World Vision and mother fund of DFAT ANCP in Ukhiya Upazila covering 4 unions of the Upazila. The goal of the project is to ‘graduate’ ultra-poor households in Ukhiya sub-districts in Cox’s Bazar out of poverty through achieving four different outcomes, Increased Household income amongst Ultra Poor(UP) households, Improved food security and nutrition of UP households, Improved financial inclusion for UP households, and Improved social and gender inclusion of UP households. The project is being implemented targeted 1440 ultra-poor families and the ultra-poor graduation model is used effectively.
